Life story

Lucy Jane Bettison was born on 9th February 1857 in Cawthorpe, Lincolnshire. She was the daughter of Richard Bettison, 29yrs, Farmer, and Mary Bardney, 28yrs, nee Osborn; she was 1 of 9 children. Lucy lived with her family in Thurlby, Bourne, Lincolnshire, until she married, aged 27yrs, in 1884.  Her husband was Doctor Thomas Harker, 32yrs, a medical manufacturer, from Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire.

Lucy and Thomas had 2 sons, Robert Grange Harker, born in Lincolnshire in 1885, and George Cuthbert Warburton Harker, born in Stroud Green, Middlesex in 1890. The boys were educated at boarding schools and Lucy and Thomas had several addresses over the following years, 90 Ebury Street, Pimlico in London SW and Coronation House, Ilfracombe in Devon, and The Rowans Grand Avenue, Worthing, Sussex.

By 1911, Thomas had retired, and they were living in Grand Avenue, Worthing, Sussex. Their younger son, George, was a student at Cambridge University, he graduated with a law degree and was articled in London in 1913. At the outbreak of war, he enlisted in the army, and in December 1917, aged 27yrs, he died from his wounds in France. He was awarded the Military Cross, For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.

Lucy and Thomas were living in Bournemouth at this time, but they returned to Grand Avenue at some point where Thomas died, aged 72yrs, in 1925. In 1939 Lucy was living with her son, Rev. Robert G. Harker, at 51, Grand Avenue, which was her address in 1948 when she died on 18th August at Ticehurst House, Tunbridge Wells, aged 91yrs.Administration was granted to Robert Grange Harker, Clerk, effects £6906 5s 4d. Value 2021 - £263K.
