Life story

Life story

Lucy, known as "Poppy" was born in Burnham, Norfolk, the daughter of Rev. Augustus Pyne and his wife Louisa Rosa. She was baptised at St Mary de Westgate church, Burnham on 21st May 1850. Her father was curate at West Bradenham in 1851 and by 1861 he was Vicar of Horning. On 17th June 1875, Lucy married Reginald Charles Douglas-Lane at Horning. By 1881, the couple had moved to Worthing where Reginald was studying theology. They had no children. By 1890, they had moved to "Kai Terri" in St Michael's Road. Reginald was suffering from progressive muscular atrophy and required a nurse. He died on 27th December 1892 and was buried at Heene. Lucy moved to Hanslope House in Southey Road, Worthing. She died at 7 Lawn Terrace, Blackheath on 24th July 1900. Probate was granted on 17th August to Edward Dillman Pyne Esq, Florence Alice Minnie Craster (wife of Archibald Sinclair Craster) and William Augustus Pyne Esq. Effect s£38130 4s 11d.

Lucy's will was published in the Brighton Gazette on 25th August 1900.

Brighton Gazette 25th August 1900

The estate has been valued at £38,130.4s. gross, including personalty of the net value of £37,075.4s., of Mrs Lucy Sadler Gardener Douglas Lane, of Hanslope House, Worthing, widow, who died on the 24th July last. Mrs Lane bequeathed to her two brothers £4,000 each; to her father-in-law, Richard Douglas Hay Lane, the income of a sum of £2000 during his life; to her brother, Hamilton St Ledger Pyne, £500; to her god-daughter, Muriel Chester, £100; to each of her executors, £100; and she left the residue of her estate to her sister, Mr Florence Annie Minnie Craster.
