Life story

Life story

Mary Cassels, the wife of John Lockhart Cassels, was born in Valparaiso, Chile, in 1860. She was a British subject by parentage. Her maiden name was Mary Thomson Livingstone. Her father was Alexander Livingstone and her mother was Christina, nee Thomson, also born in Chile, and British by parentage.

Mary was John's second wife. They married in 1887 and they had no children. John had a daughter, Ethel Mima from his first marriage. Although Mary was born in Chile by the time she was 10 the family was in Greenock,  and she remained in Scotland after her marriage , not appearing in Worthing until the 1911 Census at 6 Belsize Road. She was widowed in 1918.

In 1921 she lived with her step-daughter, Ethel Mima, now married to William Robert Smith, a solicitor, in Harrow, Middlesex.
