Life story

Mary Ann Gee was born in Chatham, Kent, she was baptised there on 25th February 1827. She was the daughter of Francis Gee, 28yrs, a soldier of 39th Bengal, Indian Army, and Eliza, 23yrs, nee Jordan. She had a sister, Elizabeth.

On 15th June 1847, aged 20yrs, Mary Ann married Lieutenant Aurelian James Money, of the East India Company, in Bengal, and their son, Edward, was born in 1848. Mary Ann was tragically widowed the following year when her husband was killed at the Battle of Chillianwala. Mary Ann returned to England with an army pension to live with her parents. Her father was now a Captain and a Military Knight, living in army quarters within the walls of Windsor Castle, and Mary Ann stayed there for 20 years.

She married again in 1873, her husband, Joseph Shorten, was from Ireland, they married in Cork and lived in Rosscarberry, Co. Cork, but after 10 years of marriage, in March 1883, Mary Ann was again widowed.

She moved to Worthing, Sussex, living at Chirriah, West Worthing, where she died on 30th July 1884, aged 57yrs. Probate was granted to her sister, Elizabeth Bird, effects £113 10s 7d. Value 2022 - £15K.
