Life story

Life story

Richard was born in New Inn, Knockgraffon, Tipperary, Ireland, the illegitimate son of Robert Carew JP and Bridget McGrath. He was baptised at New Inn on 29th October 1842. His father's address was given as Woodenstown. There are very few census records for the years 1841-1871 as most were destroyed in a fire in Dublin in 1922. Richard was educated at Trinity College in Dublin. On 20th October 1872, Robert Carew died and Richard was named as one of his executors of his will. See below for details of the estate. On 14th April 1885, Richard married Elizabeth Robbins Johnson-Walsh, widow of John Allen Johnson-Walsh in Cork. Her maiden name was Carew and she was a distant cousin of Richard. By 1888, the couple were living in Carrigrohane, Cork. Their daughter Elizabeth Nesta was born here. In 1901, Richard and his family were living in Guernsey with their daughter and her governess. In 1905, the family moved to Worthing, living at "Hazlewood" in Winchester Road. Richard died on 15th December 1917. No probate.

The Carews of Woodenstown

Parts were put up for sale in 1854. By 1870, Richard Carew owned 1277 acres. He put the lands at Glenegat up for sale in 1878, 1881 and 1892. By then he said he would accept a private offer.
