Annie Tonkin was born in Linares, Andalucia, Spain, in 1853; she was the daughter of Charles Tonkin, 25yrs, a mining engineer, and Eliza Annie, 24yrs, nee Mason. Her father was a Cornishman from St. Agnes, Cornwall, the family had a home in Saltash, Cornwall, but his employment was in Spain for many years and Annie and several of her siblings were born there.
Annie was a boarder at College House School, Saltash, when she was 17yrs old, and in 1881 she was living at the family home with 4 of her sisters, Florence, 21, Edith, 13, Alice, 11, and Ethel, 9. Their mother died in 1883.
Annie remained single and does not appear to have had any professional occupation, she lived with a friend in Worthing, Sussex, in 1891, she was boarding in Lambeth, London, in 1901, and was back in Worthing with a friend, in 1911, living at Killarney, Rowlands Road.
Annie died on 16th December 1917 in Worthing, aged 64yrs.
