Life story

Life story

Sarah Jane Austin was baptised on 24th October 1830 at St. James, Clerkenwell, Middlesex. Her father was George Austin, 30yrs, an Oil and Coalman, her mother, Mary Austin, 30yrs. She had at least 5 siblings.

In 1851, Sarah was employed as an assistant in a bookshop in Islington and lived with the bookseller's family. In 1861, aged 30yrs, Sarah was employed as a Ladies Maid, although to which family, it is unclear, as there were several aristocratic families visiting Jane, Countess of Egremont, at Orchard Wyndham, Somerset, the seat of the Earls of Egremont, at the time of the census.

Sarah married Samuel Field on 16th July 1864 at St. John, Hackney, Samuel was a stockbroker's clerk.  They had 5 children, Emily 1866, Edward 1867, Arthur 1869, Florence 1870, and Jessie 1874. They moved from Hackney to Loughton, Essex, and then to Walthamstow, Essex, where they remained until after 1891 when they moved to Worthing, Sussex, with 3 of their unmarried daughters. Samuel and Sarah lived in Winchester Road, in a house they named, Walthamstow.

Sarah was widowed in 1903 when Samuel died, aged 76yrs. At some point she left Worthing and in 1911, aged 80yrs, she was living in Croydon with daughter, Jessie. Sarah died on 25th December 1917, while living in Beckenham, Kent. Probate was granted to her daughters, Emily Sarah Field and Jessie Kate Field, spinsters. Effects £678 17s 7d. Value 2021 - £48K.
