Life story

Life story

William was born in Southwark, London, the son of David and Jane. He was baptised at St Mary Magdalene Church, Southwark on 10th Mar 1847. His father was a solicitor. William trained as a surgeon and in 1870, qualified at Guy's Hospital, London. He moved to Chichester, working as an assistant to a general practitioner. On 26th October 1875, William married Anne Morgan at St Mary's Church, Lichfield. She was the daughter of Major Butler Morgan. Tragedy struck soon after their marriage. On their honeymoon, Anne caught a chill which developed into pneumonia. She died on 12th November in Buckingham, where the couple had set up home. William became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1876. On 24th July 1879, he married Ann Harrison in Buckingham. Their son Edgar was born in 1880, followed by Harold, Eva, Ada and Rupert. William built a thriving practice in Buckingham and was much loved by the local people. There are many reports of their appreciation in the newspapers when he moved to Leicester. In 1898, the family moved to Worthing where William set up his practice in Grafton Road. He retired in 1910 and moved to Windsor Road. William died at Ladbroke Lodge, Windsor Road on 10th April 1921. No probate.

William and Annie's son Harold Morgan Blenkarne is also remembered on their gravestone. He was born on 1st November 1884 in Buckingham. He trained in London as an accountant. During the First World War, Harold served with the Royal Army Service Corps in Alexandria, Egypt. He was promoted through the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel and awarded the Star medal. In 1921, Harold was awarded the British and Victory medals as well as an OBE in the King's Honours List. In 1939, he was living at 9 Strathern Place, Hyde Park in London. Harold died at Middlesex Hospital on 24th May 1955.

"Death of a Medical Man"

The funeral took place at Heene Cemetery on Thursday afternoon of Mr William L'Heureux Blenkarne, whose death at the age of 74 was recorded in the last issue of the Gazette. Mr Blenkarne who was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, was formerly in practice in the town, living then at Vernon Lodge, Grafton Road; but latterly since his retirement, his place of residence was Ladbroke Lodge in Windsor Road.

London Gazette 1885

NOTICE is hereby given that the Partnership lately subsisting between us the undersigned, Robert De’ath and William L’Heureux Blenkarne, as surgeons at Buckingham in the County of Buckingham, under the firm of De’ath and Blenkarne, was this day dissolved by mutual consent, and that all debts due and owing to or by the said firm will be received and paid by the said Robert De’ath. Harold Morgan

Was an Accountant living as a Boarder in Teddington in 1911, and in the 1930s, 40s and 50s he was living in Paddington. He was a Stockbroker in 1931. He died in the Middlesex Hospital, his address at the time being Hyde Park.

Edgar James

Was, in 1901, living as a Boarder in Leicester, he was a Clerk to the Corporation Gas Company. In 1911 he was a Lodger in a Cambridge Lodging House, the Manager of a Motor Company. He married Mary Ann (nee Le Sauvage) Pelluet, from St Helier, Jersey, in Clapham Common  in 1911. In 1915, a Garage Manager, he enlisted in the Army Reserve in Cambridge. He became an Accountant. Mary Ann died in Ewell, Surrey, in 1959. Edgar died in St Leonards-on-Sea in 1960, his address at the time being Turkey Road, Bexhill-on-Sea.

Eva Cecilia Blenkarne

In August 1926, Eva sailed as a First Class passenger on the Empress of Scotland, from Southampton to Quebec. She returned in October the same year. Her address at the time was Buckingham Gate, in London. In 1956 she was living in Southview Drive. She died in Worthing in 1984.

Ada Maria

Married Harry Henshall in 1923. In 1927 the Couple were passengers on the Mauritania between Alexandria and Southampton. Their address was Windsor Road, Worthing. Ada died in Worthing in 1973, but doesn’t seem to be in the cemetery with her parents.

Rupert

Married Maria Scott in 1921 in Hanwell, Middlesex. He was an Accountant, later a Bank Manager.  He died in 1975 in Surrey. In the First World War he served as a Private in the East Surrey Regiment and was awarded the British and Victory Medals.
